the genesis of this commandment comes from the story of cain and abel. cain was upset that his brother abel had given a better offering to god and as a result was favored by god. god said to him “is it not so that if you improve, it will be forgiven you? if you do not improve, however, at the entrance, sin is lying, and to you is its longing, but you can rule over it.” genesis 4:7 despite this excellent advice from god which provided him a pathway to get on track with his life, cain killed abel. this event was transformative. it is contended that god never anticipated cruelty and damage that humanity could inflict upon itself. it is contended that this event was the impetus for the “shall not murder” commandment as well as others. after abel’s death, it is contended that god focused on addressing human behavior to prevent such conduct. part of this prevention is to encourage improvement of one’s character and conduct.
