a friend’s high functioning autistic son is amazing. one of his quirky predilections is an unbridled passion for technology; anything manufactured by apple makes him salivate.
one day, the boy, while we were waiting for our food at kanter’s deli, flashed at me his apple watch. the device, in the past, never impressed me. my brother- who shared a strong passion for all things apple- failed to impress me with his watch demonstration.
at the restaurant, however, this young man dazzled me with the watch’s capabilities. his presentation was so good that he nearly enticed me to purchase one. after the meal, i suggested to his father that his son would find greatness selling apple products.
thus, it was no surprise for me to hear that the new rubik’s cube world record holder, mr. max park, has moderate to severe autism. arguably, the world’s grandmaster of cube is only 21. already, he has his own wikipedia page, a netflix documentary, and over 400 tournament victories under his belt. when he was young, his mother introduced him to the cube to improve his motor skills. the idea worked and soon thereafter unleashed dominance. dailymail.com
his story is also one for sport purists. there is no faking blinding speed rubik’s cube records. as such, mr. park’s trajectory as a great athlete may take him to the heights of the likes of mr. joey chestnut, the legendary competitive eater. in the years to come, it is quite possible that mr. chestnut may be asked to make some room for mr. park on the america’s pantheon of great modern athletes.
be well!!
