sometimes complexity can be understatement. a distant indian state tribal crisis has spurred a pressing need for assistance from the state of israel. timesofisrael.com this present immigration and absorption matter is worthy of historical deep dive in the light other current immigration matters.
presently, the jewish members of the kuki tribe as seeking assistance. per michael freund, from the shavei israel organization, “the area in northeastern india where the bnei menashe community lives is experiencing grave ethnic conflicts and its members are in real danger…it is time for israel to act and bring them home to the jewish state before more bnei menashe jews are killed.” jta. org it is reported that some community members wish to immigrate to israel.
this crisis is taking place on the heels on the ukranian-russian conflict which created an influx of immigrants to israel. this occurred at a time when there was already a continuing effort to complete the longstanding ethiopian jewish migration. many beta israel were patiently waiting in the queue when russia invasion into ukraine created a new immigration dynamic. now, on top of these two, there are the kukis.
the interesting aspect of these competing groups that each community- ukraine, ethiopia and kuki- come with their own unique jewish history. ukraine’s approximate thousand year old community produced the chassidic luminaries of the baal shem tov and nachman of breslov. the ethiopian jewish [beta israel] community presents itself with a pre-rabbinic form of judaism which had unique practices, traditions, and holidays. arguably, the beta israel ventured from the levant during the second temple period. the kukis- aka the bnei menashe- have been accepted, per the chief rabbi of israel, as one of the “lost tribes”. arguably, their departure from the levant occurred after the first temple’s destruction.
in the end, there are those from asian, africa and europe who are seeking to return same home. while histories, traditions, origins are different, they all share in their devotion to god, the torah and the land of israel. hopefully, the kuki’s needs will be met in prompt fashion.
be well!!
