countless anecdotes have run through my ears. while not scientifically significant, the unanimity of these are enough to shock the conscience of any respecting social scientist. the conclusion: todays, young adults are children. they are incapable of entering the workforce in any meaningful capacity. job descriptions, in their minds, provide that attendance is voluntary. further, jobs are, at best, day care centers meant to pass the time for those who have to put on a facade of working.
those offering this consensus opinion are managers for whom i know professional and personally. the stories of short-lived tenures and malfunctioning employees are countless.
technology is in large part to blame. cell phones are both distracting and addicting. they are the worry beads of this generation. a hand held teddy bear or security. the cells phone impact on work ethics is even deeper. parents rewarded these items to their children based upon the child’s existence. locating a son or daughter at any moment served parents well. the provision of no strings items which requires monthly fees, however, created a sense of entitlement. thing were to be handed to them just because they existed.
in yuvaal harrai’s sapiens, he noted “over time, states and markets have used their power to weaken the bonds of family…”
this generation entering the work force has been traumatized by states, markets and leaders. fear mongering-beyond any past fear mongering- is the worst of any generation. growing up, i was allowed to go to school but we did-however-learn to take cover under our desks in the event of a nuclear explosion. as my generation got older, we had this generation’s fear monger, dr. anthony faucci, driving fear among us that if we had unprotected sex that we would die of aids. for this new generation, the great exaggerator, dr. anthony fauci, and others, terrified this generation that if you left your house that you were going to die of covid-19. this was couple with the likes of private jet whores who are telling them that global climate change is destroying the planet and they are going to die.
this traumatization is so bad that authorities feel quite completely comfortable lying to their faces without the belief that they will suffer any consequence for doing so. perhaps the most disgraceful piece of journalism recently was an interview with barack obama. he, a person who was in the best position to be in the know on climate issues, lectured others on climate change. yet, no one in the media appears to wonder how he can do that while owning two luxurious ocean front properties.
these children also have also been fed on social justice warriorism. workplaces are considered a site of oppression. the audacity of being told when to show up and when to leave a location. the horror of having to follow instructions. riots, looting, and deaths have occurred to progress the idea that people shouldn’t have to either follow instructions or cooperate. how could this generation be subjected to these demands!
the lockdowns damaged this generation. the advanced they myth that people can do work at home. seriously working at home is exceedingly difficult. personally, i found it impossible. the refrigerator and a big screen tv made it impossible. homes are made for enjoyment, not work. admittedly, some jobs can be done at home. those succeeding with it have great discipline.
parents challenged with these generations children are gifted with last week’s torah portion. morals and values that provide for children to develop a work ethic and be responsible individuals are available. this particular portion provided a true vaccination for the social disruption that this children face. this vaccination, unfortunately, must requires a daily booster. further, this vaccination is not one that you get from a doctor, a nurse or is dispensed at your local pharmacy. it one delivered by parents.
in devarim, 6:7, parents are instructed to teach their children and to speak of them when one sits in their house. the torah’s commandments and values are to be a daily routine, imparting children with wisdom. impliedly, as rashi notes, parents should engage in conversation with their children.
in sum, the torah’s words-which are part of the shema and v’ahavata- serve as the old testament’s instruction as to how to maintain family bonds at a time. this is so dearly needed at a time when the forces surrounding are seeking to diminish these.
be well!!
