the “looking the other way” phenomena occurs which such frequency that some individuals literally start to spin. we intentionally impair our vision for the sake of our family members, friends, political parties, and political or ideological beliefs.
why?
our cognition demands that we be consistent and logical. thus, when we are confronted with contrary data, we must address it. we can approach it with honesty. the consequences, however, can be compromising towards one’s views. or, we can do the other think. you know the other thing, “look the other way”.
a recent study found “we found overall associations between internal metal levels and exclusive marijuana use, highlighting the relevance of marijuana for metal exposure”. others in the media raised the fact that this implies a risk of cancer. dailymail.com.
with california being both a legalized marijuana state as well as one that is health conscious, i wondered how this type of information was addressed within the state’s cancer warning mandate of proposition 65. in 2022, a sheet was propounded by the state which including the following: cannabis (marijuana) smoke why am I being warned about exposure to cannabis smoke? cannabis (marijuana) smoke is on the proposition 65 list
because it can cause developmental harm and cancer. during pregnancy, smoking cannabis or being heavily exposed to
cannabis smoke can harm the development of the child. it may
affect the child’s birthweight, behavior, and learning ability.
smoking cannabis or being exposed to cannabis smoke may
increase the risk of cancer. proposition 65 requires businesses to determine if they must provide a warning about significant exposure to listed chemicals. cannabis smoke is formed when the dried leaves, flowers, stems, seeds, and resins of cannabis plants are burned. CANNABIS SMOKE cannabis smoke contains several thousand different chemicals, some of which
are on the proposition 65 list. these include: 4 chemicals that can affect the baby when the mother is exposed to them
during pregnancy such as THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol), which may affect behavior, learning ability, and susceptibility to drug addiction in offspring. 4 other chemicals that cause cancer and/or reproductive harm such as benzene, benzo[a]pyrene, 1,3-butadiene, cadmium, carbon monoxide, hexavalent chromium, formaldehyde, lead, mercury, and nickel. many of these chemicals are also in tobacco smoke, which is on the proposition 65
list as causing cancer and birth defects and other reproductive harm. how does exposure to cannabis smoke occur? If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, and you smoke cannabis, your baby is
exposed to many of the harmful chemicals in cannabis smoke.
how can i reduce my exposure and my family’s exposure to cannabis smoke? Ä if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, do not smoke cannabis. Ä avoid spending long periods of time in places where cannabis smoke is present, especially if you are pregnant.
Ä avoid smoking cannabis around children, and do not allow children to spend time in places where cannabis smoke is present.”
for most of my life, california politicians and social activists waged a war against cigarette smoking. smoking has been prohibited in many locations within the state. i am appreciative of this fact and find that it has improved my quality of life and health.
in light of the recent studies and other studies concerning marijuana, it is shocking that the state of california politicians are not enacting laws to protect the public. in other matters, however, they are doing so.
in sum, as the evidence mounts concerning health risks of marijuana, the inaction of the state toward the health of its population is remarkable but can be explained. in stealing [and misquoting] a line from the legendary raider’s team owner, al davis, i must declare “spin baby spin!”
be well!!
