In a previous post “A Dog’s Search For Meaning”, the tale was told of how a dog, unknowing of its purpose, manifested all the trappings of its true being. Despite a lack of training, or instruction, or the companionship of a similar breed, the animal was on the pathway of discovering itself.
Dogs have been bred for a specific purpose. Some are to be herders, some palace guards, and others ratters. With breeding, it would appear that they have instinctive traits.
Last weekend, our Yorkshire Terrier’s epiphany came. While my wife was walking her, the almost two year old started attacking a dirt hole. she ferociously dug down and captured a non-descript burrowing animal. The animal disentangled itself from the dog and dropped into the hole. Our Yorkie was not having any of that. For twenty more minutes she pursued the animal to no avail.
When she arrived at home, she remained spirited. She could care less that her face covered with grass and mud. Her revelation occurred.
As a puppy, “ratter” behaviors were abound. Ferociously dig into blankets and sheets, aggressively chasing balls and viciously shaking her head with the ball in her mouth are common activities. Further, she always took her walks with a level of seriousness- sniffing and searching everywhere.
At the house, after this revelation, her spirits continued to be high. She was full of aggression. She approached her food bowl and devoured her food.
We too, as Human Beings, have a purpose. In the case of the dog, with generations of breeding, a task oriented purpose developed. One must ask the question as to who is breeding humanity? And, for what purpose?
One can turn to the Bible and look towards a Deity’s words. Within the concept of an Individual Human Being, the Torah’s message runs down the pathway of nature: “Be fruitful and multiply.” As such, and many can attest, the participation in the birth and raising of a child is perhaps the most leveling and exhilirating experience a Human Being can have. Shortly after the birth of my first child, I recalled apologizing to my parents for the burden they took on from the moment I was born.
The concept of bringing into the world a child in need of constant attention and care is never fully appreciated until actually experienced. It was a moment in which my importance and life became subordinant.
Beyond the Individual, the notion of purpose can be applied to groupings of people. What is the purpose of family, community, city or nation? Discussions of these matters will be will be the subject another post.
Be well!!
