And he went ahead of them and prostrated himself to the ground seven times, until he came close to his brother. And Esau ran toward him and embraced him, and he fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept.
the bible addressed ugly confrontations, such as mr. will smith’s slapping presenter mr. chris rock. the catastrophic confrontation between cain and abel reverberates through humanity for all eternity. the master of the universe’s role in the torah illustrates his effort to heal this relationship. brotherhood can exist. to do so, he injected humility and compassion into the equation. he prevented a potentially fatal confrontation by famously dislocating jacob’s hip socket in the epic night when jacob wrestled with an angel. genesis 32
this act to disable and disfigure jacob was intended to inject humility and compassion into his relationship with his brother esau. as this post’s quote indicates, jacob showed humility to his brother and he was returned by esau with compassion. at the time, esau had reasons to be angry. he was robbed by jacob of his birthright. esau’s compassion toward jacob was divine. the positive resolution would not have taken place without these two components.
mr. rock, when being confronted by mr. smith, remained with his hands behind his back. he kept his voice calm. he placed himself in a totally defenseless position. he exuded humility. he exuded of conflict resolution. mr. smith, however, did not see or appreciate the humility he was presented. it was his time to show compassion. a “not so great joke” was not the end of the world for a man about ready to receive the crowning achievement in his acting career, an oscar for best actor. instead, he failed.
mr. rock understood that mr. smith and him are in a unique fraternity of successful entertainers. this is a unique brotherhood that they share. mr. smith, in that moment, failed to appreciate this connection.
in sum, mr. chris rock is a hero. he saved the oscars. he showed the world how humility works to heal and bond difficult situations. mr. rock should be celebrated for his conduct. if the academy truly wished to make a point on morality, they should offer mr. rock a guaranteed contract to host the oscars for many years to come. otherwise, there is the danger that mr. smith supporters will make him a pariah in the industry. if people do not act, he is in jeopardy of cancellation.
