Things, Words & Actions: D’varim

either we are told or we come to our senses, it is time to act. enough!

life is full of game changing moments. major moves must happen. the torah captures abraham at the beginning of his grand venture. he and sarah are told to get up and go.

in lech lecha, the two’s move, however, differs from the nation that they would create. the children of israel, in d’varim, had received their edict within a different context. they are presented with the following: “the lord our god spoke to us in horeb, saying, ‘you have dwelt long enough at this mountain.”

sometimes, journeys need to end. enough!

a journey’s end plays across the entire emotional spectrum. excitement, nervousness, anxiety, fear and depression mark these transformative moments.

while these monumental events arise from either external or internal sources, they are both troublesome. we are rebellious and resistant when towards authoritarians telling us what to do. we likewise struggle with personal decisions. our emotions and logic are weighed. while we may know what should be done, our terrifying uncertainty tips the imaginary scale.

“enough” is a powerful concept. “enough” means we are are the end of the road. we are about ready to board the plane to a new destination. while we may be weighted down by a small carry-on, there is nothing we cannot bare.

“enough” at times can be with unanimity. sometimes, the authority figure- the parent, the sibling, the friend or the colleague- observation of enough is at the time when the internal self in accord.

regardless of the source, moving on begins with things or words. the hebrew word d’varim means both. in the end, things and words inevitably translate into live changing actions. we are resigned that the status quo is “not” enough. rather, it is time to move on, take the step onto the plane, buckle up, and enjoy the flight.

be well!!
