Elijah, The Sequel-A Book of Kings Ten Commandments’ Moment

While the Prophet Elijah’s initial tale in the First Book of Kings is epic. After Elijah’s Mt. Sinai moment of crisis, the most famous Tishbite’s second act does not disappoint. He is the Don Corleone of Prophets. His Part II is satisfyings. Perhaps, he is also the Michael Corleone of Prophets.

Elijah’s inital story is one of re-connecting the Israelites’ relationship with their ancestoral God. Elijah’s spectacular performance in the showdown with Prophets of other Gods made the case for monolatry. Israel had one God: Hashem- the name -the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

After his Mt. Sinai encounter, Elijah delves into Ten Commandments’ matters involving justice. He becomes the voice of justice. Elijah’s nemesis-Queen Jezebel-will become his target.

Some of Jezebel’s many offenses revolve around her elaborate plot to steal a subject’s vineyard for her husband King Ahab. To accomplish it, she employed two individuals to bring false testimony against Naboth, the landowner. As a result of the false testimony- that included blasphemy allegations- Naboth was executed. His land was essentially taken for the King.

In sum, Jezebel the idolator who had previously threatened Elijah’s life, perpetrated violations from using the Lord’s name in vain, false testimony, theft, murder and coveting.

After Naboth’s death, the Lord summons Elijah to confront Ahab. “Will you murder and also inherit?” he queries. Elijah proceeds to layout the harshest of prophesies. The confrontation did have an impact; Ahab humbled himself.

Elijah continues to engage in prophesy. As a result, his life is in danger. Shortly after, he once again confronts a King- Ahaziah, over idolatry. Shortly after, the King dies.

In the end, Elijah splits the Jordan River and impresses upon his successor Elisha that he should have twice as much spirit as him. Elijah, in perhaps the greatest exit in literary history takes off into the heavens on a chariot of fire.

In sum, Elijah’s plays an immense role with the Ten Commandments. He brings religious fervor to the Northern Kingdom. He, via actions, delivers the commandments to Israel in the most viceral ways possible. His actions cause him recognition as “a Man of God.” With Jezebel, he transmits to the people that no one can escape justice as a result of their station in life.

Be well!!
