An AI Creation of God’s Image? A Ten Commandments’ Tale

After frequently employing the Jetpack AI Assistant Feedback Tool, I noticed that there was also an AI Image Generator. As the Decalogue contains a provision prohibiting making God’s image, I decided to put this AI Image Generator to a test.

Before the test, I wish to share my initial experience with the application. My initial attempts to get an image, however, were a disaster. Once the image was requested, it took an inordinate amount of time to produce it. In contrast, the AI Feedback generator providese instantaneous results.

My first successful image request was for a Book of Jonah article. Since the Prophet spent three days without panic in a whale’s stomach, I figured I could show some patience as well. In perhaps five minutes, the image finally arrived. I placed it as part of the article. [Note to self: next time, mention the whale!] In the end, I grade it as “not bad!”

Perhaps, the biggest takeaway was that the image generator’s inspiration was the actual contest of the article. The application had no prompts for generating the artwork.

With this in mind, I thought it would be great to test the image generator based upon the Ten Commandments. Thus, this article is an AI exam. Will the AI understand that there is a limitation as to what should be generated? To explore this, I am provided the following paragraphs with information concerning graven images.

Images of God are prevalent outside of Judaism. Some of the world’s most famous artwork contain the Diety’s image. Michaelangelo’s Sistine Chapel depiction of God touching Adam is perhaps the most well-known image rivaling Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.

Judaism, however, does not allow for such images. As noted, the Ten Commandments indicates that there shall be no graven images of God. Exodus 20.

With this said, we now have a moment as if the AI Generator was at the base of Mt. Sinai when Moses brought down the two tablets. Will AI understand the follow the commandments? Who knows? It may produce an image of a Golden Calf?

In sum, after this article’s completion, we will see if a picture generator can understand a thousand words. Let me know what you think.

Be well!!
