When Pro-Hamas Protestors invade college libraries, it would behoove these Cos-Players to pick up Douglas Murray’s latest book On Democracies and Death Cults. Likewise, those diligent students should pick up the book as well. After acing their exams, they would benefit from reading this author’s latest offering.
Mr. Murray is someone that budding journalists should emulate. On Democracies involves Mr. Murray’s journey to the Middle East to gain an understanding as to what happened on October 7th. His research and diverse interviews provide a multitude of perspectives concerning October 7th.
Mr. Murray’s depiction of events happening on October 7th is eye opening. Many times, I had to put the book down. The documented Hamas savagery combined with the Gazan complicity is enraging. From Mr. Murray we learn that Hamas operatives literally had shopping lists when they rampaged across Israel. Some of the innocents were for killing while others were for being taken hostage. There was a method to the madness.
Mr. Murray documents that the inhumanity extended beyond Jew killing. He details the savagery that Hamas committed towards the likes of foreign workers. God only knows how the Thai foreign workers suffered when Hamas exterminated them. Mr. Murray reminds of the horror that many innocents encountered on their last day on the planet.
The book touches on a variety of topics. The pre-October 7th funding of Hamas, as well as the post-October 7th rallies supporting Hamas. One take-away from On Democracies is that the world community blindly throws money at problems with little accountability in play. Simply writing the checks satisfies their moral obligation of some countries. The fact that it is used to commit atrocities doesn’t matter.
Critique
While Mr. Murray details most military conflict in the Middle East post Israel independence, there is one missing. Most people never learn of the 1956 military action that occurred in the Middle East. French, British and Israeli troops engaged in a military action against Egypt. This was in response to the country’s nationalization of the Suez Canal. The United States opposed the tripartite action. As a result, the troops withdrew. This conflict was a win for the Egyptian Leader Nasser and elevated his status in the region. Did this event shape the current conflict?
While October 7th is the focus of the event, Israel pre-October 7th was politically in shambles. The upset over “judical” reform had people refusing to report for military service. There was difficulty maintaining a government. Netanyahu, as a political figure, remained a lightning rod.
On the other side, the Biden White House re-opened the relief faucet of funds to Gaza. Likewise, the likelihood of a Trump second term was largely inconceivable. One must wonder whether Sinwar believed that the changing political tides had offered him a window of opportunity to attack.
Finally, one must wonder how much outside political influence was involved is Israeli politics. How much anti-Netanyahu discord as well as the opposition to judicial reform was funded or encouraged by outside sources? Where there outside agitators? Who were they? What was their role in creating the upheaval?
Conclusion
Rather than mindlessly chanting of “from the river to the sea”, College-age students would be better served by reading Mr. Murray’s book and learn about land which is in fact between the river and the sea. Mr. Murray’s outstanding book is a great start for beginning to understand and appreciate the complexity of what has occurred.
The savagery done to the Thai foreign agricultural workers made me pause to think. ALL OF HUMANITY should understand that October 7th was an affront to civilization itself. No person in their right mind could ever condone that activity. These Thai workers were not the hated Jews. They were simply people trying to make a living in a foreign land. They were people whose looks should have given a Hamas invader pause. These were not the Jews they were looking for! Being in the Hamas Death Cult, however, meant that they could care less.
Be well!!
