there is the original ten commandments.
since then, on the back of original ten commandments, the notion of packaging rules with the number ten has become popular. you can go on the internet and find all sorts of ten commandments such as the ten commandments for learning how to computer code, the ten commandments for enzymology, ten commandments for blogging, and ten commandments of business.
should the ten commandments have a ten commandments as well?
if one was to make a ten commandments for the ten commandments, there is a particular prayer of import. the prayer incorporates various torah passages that would be applicable. the prayer is the shema.
the shema is as follows: “hear, o israel: the lord is our god; the lord is one. and you shall love the lord, your god, with all your heart and with all your soul, and with all your means. and these words, which i command you this day, shall be upon your heart. and you shall teach them to your sons and speak of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk on the way, and when you lie down and when you rise up. and you shall bind them for a sign upon your hand, and they shall be for ornaments between your eyes. and you shall inscribe them upon the doorposts of your house and upon your gates.”
taking these concepts from the shema, it is possible to cobble together a ten commandments for the ten commandments.
so, here is my attempt to fashion a ten commandments for the ten commandments.
- study the ten commandments
- place a sign of the ten commandments in your house
- teach the ten commandments to your children
- speak of them in your home
- speak of them when on the road
- act upon them in your house
- act upon them on the road
- have them in your heart when you are home
- have them in your heart when you are on the road
- go back to number 1 and begin again.
be well!!
