A Better CRT? Critical Responsibility Theory: A Ten Commandments’ Tale

perhaps there is a CR theory that should be taught to children: “critical responsibility” theory. the theory is simple. “responsibility” is an important value in being a productive member of to society.

with this crt theory, how should it be taught in school?

i offer the following as discussion points for a teacher to employ in a class discussion:

the teacher can prompt the discussion along the lines of:

as a student, one is “responsible” for respecting their teachers and their classmates. they are responsible for paying attention and participating in class. they are responsible for doing their assignments and homework. they are “responsible” to not litter at school and throw out their trash. they are “responsible” to not vandalize the school property. they are “responsible” in giving their best effort every day to be a better student.

the teacher can then prompt the children to discuss what other examples of being “responsible.” the teacher can then prompt the children to ask them “how does people being “responsible” make a better school?”

the teacher can then take the topic beyond the school setting:

the teacher can prompt as follows:

as a child, one is “responsible” by respecting their parents and caregivers. children are responsible by cleaning up after themselves and putting their things away. they are “responsible” when they listen to and follow their parents and caregivers instructions. children may be “responsible” for taking care of pet or plants as well.

the teacher can prompt the children to discuss what other examples of being “responsible” happens where they live. the teacher can then prompt the children to ask them “how does people being “responsible” make their home life better?”

as a parent, one is “responsible” for taking care of their children’s needs. they are responsible by either working to bring money for the family or by staying home and taking care of the families needs. they are responsible to take their children to school and make sure that they are educated.

the teacher can prompt the children to discuss what other examples of parents being “responsible.” “the teacher can ask how does people being “responsible” make their family life better?”

the teacher can prompt as follows:

as a member of a community, one is “responsible” by making their community better. one is “responsible” in assisting the elderly in the neighborhood. one is responsible when they prevent children from doing things unsafe such as cross a street unattended. one is responsible in the community for not making a mess and making sure garbage is thrown away. one is “responsible” when they see a neighbors pet lose and return it.

the teacher can prompt the children to discuss other examples of “members of a community” making it better. the teacher can ask how does people being “responsible” make their a community better?”

in sum, i invite teachers to consider using this as a lesson plan. if you do, please post comments as to how the class responds.

be well!!
